Though small and for many people still unknown ("Lithuania? - it must be somewhere in Africa…"), the country is quite famous with its flying people. Lithuania was one of the beginners of Hanggliding in former SU, 25 years of Lithuanian HG was celebrated in 2002. Paragliding did its first steps in 1990, in 1995 the first competition was held with 10 participants. Number of pilots growing rapidly, especially during last 3 years, now counts over 150. Lithuanian pilots participated in World Air Games I and II. 11 clubs, under Lithuanian Hangliding and Paragliding Sports Federation, are located in Vilnius, Kaunas, Panevezys, Klaipeda regions. National PG & HG champ is held every year and other competitions. Since 1996, Lithuanian pilots participate in competitions abroad, in 2002 the first international rankings were achieved. Lithuania Open 2003 is ranked as class II FAI event. The longest XC distance taken is 187 km (summer 2002), the registered Lithuanian PG record is 119 km, registered HG record 120 km. Flying sites. Lithuania is not rich with mountains, mostly the flying is done with towing. Also ridge soaring on some hills make joy, especially on dunes of Neringa at the coast of Baltic Sea. Flying season lasts from early spring (end of March) till middle autumn (October), the best thermal activities happening in May-beginning of June However, many pilots continue flying (mainly, soaring on hills) in winter also and International Precision Landing competition is held in February near Trakai castle since 1999. Citizens of most European countries do not require entry visa for Lithuania (except Romania, Ukraine, Russia, Belorussia, etc).
